Holmwork Sketchbook Vol. 1   Illustration

Keeping a sketchbook (or three) is one of my daily practices. I try to draw every day, whether it’s an intentional sit-down with an idea in mind, or idling drawing my dogs until they fill several pages, or sketching charicatures of ad agency producers on Zoom calls. Much more than a drawing exercise, it allows me to explore ideas, techniques, mediums and different styles that I might not otherwise give time to. I love the freedom of a sketchbook, there is no expectation of the picture-perfect sketchbooks that are carefully curated by Instagram influencers. It’s just a stream of consciousness, or subconsciousness flowing out through my pencil. Once my sketchbooks fill up I like to go back through and pull my favorite drawings and bring them into Procreate on an iPad and finish them up with color and texture, while retaining the original looseness and character that makes them so special.
